INTRODUCTION
Foro Consulting Inc. is involved in various project typologies, including architectural and interior design, primarily for offices, banks, and, more recently, commercial developments. During my tenure, I was mentored by Ar. Michael Francis C. Olivares and was responsible for creating architectural drawings, detailing, renderings, and other related tasks in the practice. These included site inspections, project monitoring, and coordination with project representatives, contractors, suppliers, and allied professionals.
WORKFLOW
I spent my first few weeks learning ArchiCAD, a BIM software that was relatively new to me and with which I had no prior experience. Thankfully, I was given ample time—about two weeks—to familiarize myself with it. The first project I was involved in was a residential development, where I was tasked with creating detailed plans for each toilet and bath. The compound had a total of eight houses, and I managed to complete half of the plans before being reassigned to other projects.
Next, I rotated to an office project located in Egypt, where our team, along with one of our senior designers, proposed test-fit plans. I later worked on various office projects that included test-fits, interior fit-outs, interior renderings, office planning, and, of course, toilet details (my favorite). Another significant project for me was an office building in Pasay, which consisted of approximately ten floors (if I recall correctly) and included several office departments, multiple pantries, meeting rooms, a session hall, and banquet facilities. I was also able to visit the site during its construction phase and conduct inspections alongside a colleague.
Other projects I participated in included bank planning and interior renderings; a Thai restaurant requiring renderings and minor exterior elevation modifications; hotel villa planning, renders, stair and pool detailing for permitting; and a showroom for hotel interior products and finishes. For the showroom, I was assigned to detail the entire mock-up room with a colleague, including built-in furniture, furniture details, renderings, and all documentation needed for permits.
My favorite—and probably most challenging—project was a commercial complex with four tenant spaces. Two of those spaces were later developed into a two-storey Filipino restaurant, which required complete interior detailing. I didn’t expect the company to entrust a ground-up project to a fresh graduate, but with the support of the entire team, I managed to handle it. It was challenging because I had no background in commercial projects—even in college—and had little understanding of the systems used. It was a completely new area for me to explore.
During this project, I learned a great deal—from starting and coordinating a project with allied professionals to seeking approvals, requesting samples from suppliers, and even instructing contractors on-site. I really enjoyed working on it and learned so much from everyone, especially my mentor. Ar. Mike is highly skilled and detail-oriented; he can spot even the smallest mistakes in a drawing and address them immediately.
Also, they had a lot of architectural books—many of which were from Germany (I think). Even though I couldn't read the text, the drawings were clear and highly detailed. Unfortunately, most contractors didn’t implement the designs as intended, since the details were quite advanced and beyond their means to replicate. Nevertheless, I still found detailing very enjoyable—especially millwork, molding, and wood ceiling panels. Ar. Mike was very meticulous with details—his eyes would catch even the tiniest radius to deal with.
Even though I truly enjoyed working at Foro, I knew I had to move forward. Last April, I decided to leave the company and rendered my final month to complete all the required drawings and details for my assigned projects. Last July 2024, I passed the Master Plumber Licensure Exam, and, as if perfectly timed, this year I ended my two-year journey with Foro and passed the Licensure Exam for Architects just a month and a half later.
CHALLENGES
Every great adventure comes with its challenges, and adapting to new environments is no exception. One significant hurdle was the occasional reassignment of individuals to assist with other and new projects, often at unexpected times. This made it even more challenging to adapt and consistently apply company standards.
Ideally, there can be a centralized database where all critical information is synthesized and organized. This database could include readily available templates—not just for technical documents but also for reports, drawing sheets, and specifications. Such a system would streamline processes and make it much easier for employees to access the information they need, ensuring a smoother integration into the company workflow.
Another area for improvement is the onboarding process. New employees would greatly benefit from a structured orientation routine designed to accelerate their adaptation. Clearly communicating expectations from the outset and providing essential resources, such as a comprehensive guidebook or a catalog of company standards, would make the transition more efficient and less overwhelming. It takes a great deal of interest and dedication to integrate with Foro but rest assured that your colleagues and seatmate will always be there to help you.
TAKEAWAYS
During my tenure, I learned and experienced a great deal—both professionally and personally. I encountered conflicts, navigated through misunderstandings, and faced challenges that tested my adaptability and communication skills. But at the end of the day, it was all part of the job, and what truly matters are the lessons I carried with me along the way.
This experience gave me a valuable glimpse into what an architectural firm should stand for: collaboration, attention to detail, continuous learning, and integrity in practice. I’m genuinely grateful to my colleagues, friends, and especially my mentor for guiding me through this journey and for the opportunity to grow within such a spirited environment.
